In 1907, John Pierpont Morgan coordinated a bailout of Wall Street in that era's financial panic. His modern day successor, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, played a similar role by bailing out and subsequently buying rival Bear Stearns for the bargain basement price of $2 per share. That's an astonishingly low price -- about a quarter of the value of Bear Stearns' Manhattan headquarters of around $1.2 billion.

The Repo Tour

It's called a "repo tour." A repo tour is when you fill a bus with prospective home buyers and take them on a tour of homes in or near foreclosure that sell for "below market" prices. Last week, the first repo tour ever made its way through Jackson County, Oregon, my neck of the woods. They called it "The Tour of Hot Deals."

Buffett on the move... This week Berkshire Hathaway bought a 3% stake in Swiss Reinsurance, the world's biggest reinsurer. Buffett has been hot on insurance in the past month. He recently received a license to start a bond insurance company in New York and bought a reinsurance unit from ING for $440 million.
