By Andrew Gordon You really want to know one thing about the new president. Can he use his presidential powers, huge majority in the Congress, and the inevitable honeymoon period (first 100 days or so) to fix the economy? |

By Andrew Gordon My son the cop is jealous. His friend just bought a new Hummer. My son Nick drives an unmarked Pontiac. A Hummer would be much better at cutting off speeding cars. And his police department could afford these babies. His friend only spent $16,000. |

By Christian Hill Both the ISM Index and ISM Services reports come out this week, and it looks like the slide continues. The Index report coming out this morning is likely to show a drop to 42.0 from last month’s 43.5 reading. The Services Index is likely to show a more dramatic shift. Last months reading was 50.2, which shows ever so slight expansion since the reading was above 50.0. This month the reading is expected to dip down to 48.5, signaling contraction. |

By Rick Pendergraft It’s finally here. The long awaited and hard fought election will end tomorrow (at least I hope we don’t see a repeat of 2000 where we don’t know who won for weeks). Rather than make predictions about the election itself, I want to tell you how I think things will play out after the election. |

By Andrew Carpenter For a guy with a Harvard MBA, President Bush simply doesn't get how real banks work... but anyone who has waited three to five days for an out of state check to clear gets how the "float" works. |

He never said anything important, and he always said it sonorously." - Sinclair Lewis, Elmer Gantry Quote of the Week 2: "Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don't pretend to understand." - Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird |

By Christian Hill America loves lists. We keep track of everything. Lists like the best pizza in a particular city, the 100 best movies ever made, and the best companies to work for all get our attention. One list that interests me every year is the Forbes list of "The 200 Best Small Companies" which comes out this time every year. But I like this list for a reason that might surprise you. |

By Steve McDonald "Living on $1700 a month sounds like a very slow, painful existence. Not what I planned for in my retirement." If you aren't already aware of it, the baby boomers have started to retire. They first hit the system a few years ago. Over the next twenty to thirty years, our culture will be challenged as never before by the largest shift of population ever to leave a work force and begin retirement. |

Andrew Carpenter Yes, I know you're angry and it's all my fault. If I were in your town right now, I'd drop right over and we could hug it out. Instead, just let me make sure you know that I am here for you - that you can take it out on me... I am a big man. |

Christian Hill The Chevrolet Volt is scheduled to roll off the assembly lines in Hamtramck sometime in late 2010. The vehicle will be powered by onboard batteries and a 1.4 liter 4 cylinder engine that will kick on after the 40 mile range of the battery charge has run out. General Motors likes to refer to it as an “electric car” but in reality it is a hybrid gas-electric vehicle. |

By Andrew Gordon Oil prices have dropped 55 percent from their peak in July and they could go lower. That's what you want, isn't it? Cheaper gas and cheaper heating fuel allows you to spend more on things you really need – like your kids' education or appliances. |

By Andrew Gordon Equities aren't the only markets acting strangely these days. The bond markets are acting even stranger. For both bond and equity markets the cause of this strange behavior is the same: Piecemeal government actions in the U.S., Europe and Asia culminating in massive intervention. |
