Independence didn’t come easy for the United States. It took years of debates and planning. Lives were lost in the process. Yet in the end, the most powerful nation in the world was born.
If you’re an American, you’re used to independence.

Sure, many of us complain about how the government can wiretap our lines or how they put cameras on every corner. But in the end, we usually don’t go to jail for expressing those thoughts. We aren’t told how much flour we can buy. We aren’t limited to only having two children.

I mention this because so many people take our independence for granted. They’ve lived in the states their whole life. They’re used to cable… cell phones… and broadband connections. They’re used to buying tickets to go see Paul McCartney. They’re used to being able to do pretty much anything they want, without taking any slack for it.

As the saying goes, ‘Freedom isn’t free’.

Our freedom was paid for by those who believed in the U.S. JFK, Lincoln, and other presidents died for a nation they truly believed in. Our world would be completely different if it wasn’t for their huge contributions.

And let’s not forget all of those who went to war and died for our cause. Regardless what you believe about the wars we’ve had thus far, these were individuals who were willing to fight for the U.S. no matter what.

While millions go out every single night to eat, they never once consider that one day, we may not be free. One day, we may go through a bad war and see curfews and drafts. We may get in a horrible car accident and find ourselves relying on everyone else just to stay alive.
Our freedom could vanish in the blink of an eye. So it’s important that we appreciate it while it’s here. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned about America and Americans in general, it’s that despite all our differences we all come together to help out.

A Blockbuster Mistake

But sometimes we become distracted. Nobody can be blamed for it. Some of us have lost jobs or taken a pay cut. But we should never lose sight of the freedoms we have.

Tonight we’ll be able to walk outside, have a beer with some friends, and watch an awesome display of fireworks. Others may not choose to do that. Maybe other people just want a quiet night with the person they love, where they can just look out the window and see the fireworks go off from their family room. And others still will stay up as late as they want, say as many bad things about those in power as they’d like, and then go to sleep in their cozy bed.

We’re free… but we should help those that aren’t.

So do me a favor and try to make a point to put some money into a charity that you believe in. Make it a point to use your freedoms to their fullest. Lastly, make it a point to help those that need it the most.

America needs to come together again to make it through the troubling times facing us. By realizing the freedoms we really do have and opening our hearts, we’ll experience the best kind of freedom there is.

With that, I’d like to leave you with a quote from one of our founding fathers, John Adams…

“I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will triumph in that Days Transaction.”

Have a great Fourth,
Charles
