Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG:NYSE) is another highflier that’s been beaten up in this tough market. If you haven’t eaten there, Chipotle makes amazing burritos. The trouble is, with the price of food going up, the cost to make those burritos has been rising, too.

Last Saturday’s “Vladimir Putin is a badass” column drew a slew of response. Of the nearly 40, all but three were positive.
And, that means I owe you an apology.
You see, I have been writing here at IDE for about eight months,
so I am still learning how smart you all are… smart on China, smart on Vietnam, smart on oil, smart on banking… scary smart on just about everything that has to do with money!

But, as it goes with all learning curves, I occasionally skid off the road.

You see, the stuff I write on Saturdays is free content. So, sometimes when I am busy with my paid stuff I think, “Hell I’ve got four, maybe five hours here, that’s enough time to toss off something for which there is no charge.”

But, as with many things in life, the less time invested in something usually yields double the hell.

And, I am not talking political hell, either. That comes every week from the increasingly comical far right wing… but I am happy to give them a place to vent.

They’re so angry today that it’s impossible to innocently write “there’s an ugly bush in my front yard,” without evoking a charge that the author is a treasonous a**hole.

Of course, when you think about it, you can’t blame the far right for being steamed. As with all bubbles, they thought theirs’ was evidence of a new paradigm. But, as with all bubbles – even conservatism – theirs’ has burst.

Because of that, the Cheney wing of the far right is about to be relegated to the same status as women, Mormons and African Americans were in the 1950s… marginalized with almost no influence in Washington. Ouch!

This means, once I remove the knee-jerks from the weekly responses, I judge my weekly efforts by how much evidence you provide that would suggest to a reasonable person that I might be an a**hole purely on a point of logic or theory.

And, that is why my piece last Saturday scared the pants off of me.

Man-oh-man, I assure you I did the work. But, mostly what had me tossin’ and turnin’ was the fact that – though ripped from the headlines – I wondered whether the analysis would resonate within the IDE community… would a piece on Russia be considered relevant.

So, I apologize for worrying that you only cared about money, money, money.

Not only are you all pretty sharp, but you’re absolutely locked into the fact that events half a globe away actually reverberate all the way to your world.

The proof was in your responses:

Alex A. used his crackberry to suggest that last Saturday’s piece on Russia and Georgia was:

    “One word: brilliant!”

Jean E. wrote:

Just a few words. Mister you nailed the scenario to the wall. Indeed, indeed!!!

The real world according to Andy Carpenter.  GREAT!!!!!!!

How great it is to actually read straightforward, common sense opinion on the Georgia fiasco.

Tom A. wrote:

I thought your article on Russia’s re-emergence was interesting, and the information regarding global expansion was very enlightening

Jack E. wrote:

My compliments to you on an interesting, insightful and well-written article, which amply demonstrates how the U.S. is once again caught up in the backlash of its own political ineptness.

Dom B. wrote:

Andy – good piece of analysis. One of your best columns, in that you point out what the media has missed on several counts.

Jerry G. wrote:

Thanks for your most insightful article on what Russia's involvement in Georgia means.

Andy C. wrote – that’s me again – thanks for all your feedback. Hope it doesn’t raise the bar too high, because sometimes it’s fun to let it fly and write about that bush in my front yard… as in, it really needs to be replaced with one that offers me more security and privacy.

See you all Saturday.

Andy
