Brass Bulls
by J. Christoph Amberger, President, Taipan Financial News
It never ceases to surprise me how dead and deserted Manhattan’s Financial District looks like on a weekend, especially a holiday weekend.
One of the magnets drawing tourists is the Charging Bull
at the lower end of Broadway. Supposedly weighing in at 7,000 pounds of bronze -- I can’t confirm or deny -- the statue is considered a bit of a good-luck piece for traders, brokers and investors.

Alan Greenspan opined today that “forces behind current market turmoil are identical to previous economic upheavals,” including the 1987 stock-market crash and the 1998 Long-term Capital Management debacle.

He added that the fear driving the current market is “far more potent” than the euphoria that fuels expansion and creates bubbles. I’ve argued in the past -- most recently in the speech I gave to a full room at the Washington, D.C. Money Show this past Thursday -- that the current subprime crisis is probably most accurately compared to the 1998 downturn following the demise of the notorious hedge fund…

Which, if you kindly remember, was the last great buying opportunity before the last and most powerful phase of the Wall Street bull market of the 1990s took off, spitting out equity millionaires like a popcorn machine.
