Outside of the Consumer Price Index report for September, the focus this week will be on economic activity.
There are several reports that will give us a clue as to where the economy is heading, starting this morning with the New York Empire State Index.  This report is expected to drop to 14 from a reading of 14.7 in August.
Wednesday, the Fed Beige Book report will be released.  This is one to watch closely since the Fed puts it together.  Analysts will be looking at each region and will be looking for changes in employment and output.  These were the two primary areas of concern for the Fed in the minutes from the September FOMC meeting.

The leading indicators report for September will be released on Thursday.  Analysts expect the report to show an improvement to 0.4 percent after a decline of 0.6 percent in August.  This report has alternated positive and negative months for the past five months.  If the pattern holds, we’re due for a positive number in September.

The last report for the week is the Philly Fed survey, which is due out at noon on Thursday.  Analysts are expecting economic activity in the region to dip slightly from the 10.9 reading in August to 8.0 in September.
